Executive Summary

Purpose: The purpose of this project was to assess the patient who has an impaired glucose tolerance during their pregnancy, Will the benefit of patient education help with patient outcomes? Gestational Diabetes occurs or is diagnosed during a woman's pregnancy even if she has never had diabetes before. There are so many risks and complications from glucose intolerance that not only affect the mother but can also put the unborn child at risk during and after pregnancy. My Project location is at a terribly busy doctor's office located in a low-income community. This office services women for gynecological checkups, birth control, lab work and prenatal care.   The area we service has many members of the population being low to no income, overweight, poor diet and a lack of prenatal care. Synthesis of Literature and Evidence: Literature has shown that gestational diabetes is a disorder that should be diagnosed and treated early. Some women believe that because they have never been diagnosed with diabetes, that they are not at risk but that's not true.  Some may have risk factors for type 2.

American Diabetes Association recommends being tested during your first prenatal visit. This is also a good time to make sure your pre baby weight is in a healthy range. Being obese can bring about risk and complications, vital development for your unborn starts early so taking care of your body and knowing your risk before you conceive is just as important as when you conceive. The purpose for screening diagnosing and treating Gestational diabetes would be to reduce the risk of complications to the mother and child during and after pregnancy.   Early education on diet and exercise can give mom a better handle on a healthy lifestyle(Cho, 2019) There are so many risks and complications from glucose intolerance increase like C sections, preeclampsia, even injuries during delivery that makes treatment and prevention of this disorder so important. These effects are pricey for stakeholders also, like the insurance companies who has to pay extra to cover the expenses of a mother with diabetes and the baby who suffers afterwards.During pregnancy, diabetes control will require more work, the home blood sugar checks are a key part of taking good care of self and baby(Yang,2017) Other stakeholders are the hospital systems that have to handle this type of care the high-risk physicians who have to take care of these patients. In pregnant patients experiencing gestational diabetes, does targeted education on diet and exercise enhance patient understanding of maintaining good health for self and baby after the educational session………..
