History of Crystal Lake
- Discovered by Beman and Polly Crandall in February 1836 who were granted homestead rights by the U.S. government in August 1836.
- An old Native American trail from Chicago into Wisconsin passed through Crystal Lake, and became Route 14.
- In 1855, the first railroad was built in Crystal Lake, giving it direct access to Chicago, making it the first commercial hub of McHenry County.
- New technology helped develop the town
