Reflection Essay
Buddhism is a religion that started in India and has now spread across the world. It has over 300 million followers worldwide (World Religions, 1999). It began with the awakening or Enlightenment of Siddhartha Gautama who later became known as Buddha. Siddhartha originally lived a luxurious, but very sheltered life until the age of 29 when he became exposed to the suffering of the world. Wanting answers to questions such as why there was suffering, could it be avoided, why do people age and die, is there an afterlife and rebirth, and how should we live, Siddhartha left behind the luxurious life as he knew it in search of answers (Molloy, 2013).
