While giving speeches, particularly during social movements, body language is of the utmost importance. Social movement leaders need to be charismatic and capable of capturing an audience’s attention. Body language is examined by political scientists and historians to determine the leadership skills of those behind social movements (Morlino et al., 2017). This paper seeks to critically summarize two speeches: Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream “speech and Alicia Garza's "Black Lives Matter" speech, to compare Dr. King's leadership, charisma, power, and passion in capturing his audience to Alicia Garza's speech, including the location and messaging, and examine how the audiences in Dr. King's speeches relate to the audiences in Alicia Garza's speeches.
Summary of the Speeches
Speaking at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. on August 28, 1963, as part of the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. gave his famous "I Have a Dream" speech (Card, 2018). King's speech sought to eradicate racial discrimination and segregation in the US. King urged in his speech that racial injustice stop and that all Americans, irrespective of their skin tone, be treated equally. He described his dream of a time when people would be judged on their character rather than the skin color.
