Representation in Congress
A key component of democratic government is congressional representation since it influences the opinions of those who make decisions (Morlino et al., 2017). This paper seeks to critically discuss the proportion of the various groups of people in Congress, reflect on what the patterns say about the nature of representation, the reasons for the underrepresentation of some groups, the reason for the rising trend for women and minorities in the Congress and the effects of their underrepresentation on congress business and how to address the situation.
According to Schaeffer (2023), there are 535 members of the 118thCongress, with 435 in the House of Representatives and 100 in the Senate. Of these members, 150 are women, 63 are African American descent, five are of Native American descent, 62 are people of Hispanic descent, 21 are people of Asian descent, and 13 are openly gay or lesbian. Women make up28.5% of Congress, openly gay or lesbian members makeup 2%, Hispanic Americans make up11.5%, Native Americans 0.9%, African Americans 11.7%, and Asian Americans 3.9%.
These representational patterns reveal a lot about the nature of representation in Congress. Women and minorities have little representation in Congress, so these groups' opinions and interests are not adequately considered when making policies (Lemaitre & Opello, 2018).
