Summary of the Case

Gideon v. Wainwright is a landmark case that addressed the Sixth Amendment's right to counsel. Florida citizen Clarence Earl Gideon, accused of breaking and entering, appeared before the Florida state court without a lawyer. Gideon was left with no other option but to defend himself when the trial judge dismissed his request for legal counsel. After being found guilty, Gideon got sentenced to a five-year imprisonment term.
