Professional Leadership Communication and the Practice Scholar
Successful communication is a necessary part of any professional leadership, and for the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) scholar, it is no different. Being able to effectively communicate can positively influence peer or employee trust, their willingness to be open to change, and support the organizational change through behavioral reinforcement (Men et al., 2020). The purpose of this paper will be to explore verbal, non-verbal, and written communication competencies and how they relate to the practice scholar. Within each area of communication, specifics related to that form of communication and how it impacts the effectiveness of communication will be explored as it pertains to the practice scholar and professional leader.
Verbal Communication Competencies and the Practice Scholar
Verbal or oral communication is a cornerstone of communication with one another. Its importance and discipline can be traced back to the fifth century B.C. when in Athens, Greece the citizens were required by the courts to advocate for themselves publicly. Those that were successful obtained more power, wealth, and status. Those who lacked skill in verbal communication hired educators of rhetoric to help them achieve success in communication (Banwart, 2020).
Key Components of Verbal Communication
The basic key components of verbal communication are semantics, syntax, and pragmatics. The product of these key components is to send a specific message to a listener (McDuffie, 2013). Semantics correlates to vocabulary and is important to the practice scholar as they move into professional leadership roles. Choosing the correct words can drive home a point or idea and give a vision to an idea.
