Leadership ability is not an inherent trait. It is something that is learned through both formal and informal means. Life experiences can also develop into leadership skills. Today’s medical field requires adequate guidance to propel itself into the future of health care where change needs to take place. The goal of this paper is to present insight into a self-reflection of my leadership skills, both strengths, and weaknesses, and to form a plan to become more efficient in these skills. We will take a look at a strength-to-strategy plan, the curriculum vitae, and an action plan. By studying the elements of this paper, I will be able to objectify these important traits and learn what I need to do to become a more effective leader.

Strengths-to-Strategy Plan

 

It is always important to take inventory of one’s strengths and weaknesses. In this portion of the paper, I will discuss my 1) leadership strengths, 2) leadership weaknesses, 3) strategies for turning weaknesses into strengths, and 4) strategies for leveraging the strength of others.

Leadership Skills

 

The strengths of a good leader are plenty, but every leader does not need all of these to be effective as long as your team has strengths you can leverage. According to the Zenger-Folkman Assessment, communication, inspiration and motivation, and teamwork are some of my strengths. As a leader, I would have to communicate on many different levels. Not just with my team, but with administration, patients, and interdisciplinary teams. And one of the most important aspects of communication is listening attentively. I can change my style of communication depending on who my audience is to promote understanding by all parties. And above all, I always give the other person my undivided attention so that they know what they say is important to me. Without good communication skills, I would not be able to effectively pass

 

on ideas, motivate, or communicate change plans in a manner where I will be understood (Fisher, 2017).

Change will never take place if the team is not motivated to do so. Leaders must motivate and inspire the team through setting good examples, meeting the needs of the team, and rewards such as praise and recognition for a job well done.
