In this iHuman case scenario, the patient presented with chronic lower
abdominal pain. In order to rule out certain diagnoses I chose to order
a CBC, CRP, TSH, free T4, and abdominal CT. Utilizing the MD save
website to calculate the national average cost of these diagnostic tests
without insurance, I found that the total costs would be about $1,096
(MDsave, n.d.). For someone who is uninsured, this may be beyond
what she can reasonably afford. Therefore, I would likely narrow
down the diagnostic tests to just the CBC and CRP to see if she has
any indications of systemic infection or inflammatory disease. With
just these two blood tests, the total cost would closer to $64 (MDsave,
n.d.). I believe that it is important to discuss cost of services and
diagnostic procedures that are not covered by their insurance or with
patients that are self-pay as they may not follow-up if their financial
situation is not part of their care plan. Those living in poverty have
been linked to higher rates of chronic disease and disability (Parry et
