Diagnostic testing
The DSM-5 defines adjustment disorder as “the presence of emotional or behavioral symptoms in response to an identifiable stressor(s) occurring within 3 months of the onset of the stressor(s)” (Peterson, T. et al., 2021). Further, excessive distress in comparison to anticipated responses to the stressor is a key criteria. The symptoms must reach a clinically significant level, leading to noticeable distress and hindrance in daily functioning. Additionally, the following conditions must be met:
- The distress and impairment should be specifically linked to the stressor and should not represent an exacerbation of pre-existing mental health conditions.
- The reaction should not be a typical part of the grieving process.
- Once the stressor is no longer present or the individual has initiated the process of adaptation and coping, the symptoms should diminish within a six-month timeframe……….. Continue
