Primary Diagnosis
The primary diagnosis for this week’s case study is obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). According to the American Psychiatric Association (2013), this psychiatric disorder is characterized by time-consuming, distressing, and dysfunctional obsessions and/or compulsions. An important distinction to note is that these behaviors and thoughts are not a direct result of an underlying medical condition or substance use. Obsessions are described as intrusive, unwanted thoughts or urges that induce anxiety or avoidance behaviors. The patient is usually able to recognize that they are irrational and illogical. Compulsions are repetitive behaviors and thoughts that a patient feels obligated to perform to relieve their anxiety. These behaviors are typically repetitive and methodical (Koran and Simpson, 2013).
Diagnostic Testing
There is no specific diagnostic test for OCD. Certain labs, imaging, and
testing can be done to rule out other causes of symptoms due to a
different medical condition. Diagnosis is primarily made based on the
patient’s self-reported symptoms, observed patient behavior, and/or
reports of symptoms made from family and friends of the patient. The
DSM-5 outlines the diagnostic criteria for OCD, which can inform
