Cervicitis is an inflammatory syndrome in women, and its characteristics include mucopurulent cervical discharge or friability on the cervical exam (Dionne-Odom & Marrazzo, 2020). If not treated, cervicitis may lead to infections of the upper genital tract including pelvic inflammatory disease or endometriosis (Dionne-Odom & Marrazzo, 2020).
Diagnostics:
Urine culture: negative (no bacterial growth)
UA: positive for leukocyte esterase and high WBC count (11-50), with slightly cloudy
clarity
Saline Wet Mount: leukocytes are present; no motile flagella or clue cells are visualized. Potassium Hydroxide (KOH) prep test: negative for candida
Chlamydia trachomatis culture: no species isolated Herpes simplex virus (HSV) C&S: negative
Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) urine: negative Neisseria gonorrhea culture: Positive
Medications:
Rx: Ceftriaxone 500mg intramuscular (IM) x 1 dose. Dispense quantity: 1 Refills: 0 (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2022)
