When talking about Serotonin, I also would like to mention Serotonin Syndrome (SS) as a complication of prescribing too many serotonergic drugs. Typically, Serotonin drugs such as SSRI are prescribed to a patient with depression. For instance, Prozac helps patients feel reenergized. On the other hand, because this drug has a long half-life, doctors do not prescribe other serotonergic medications with Prozac to avoid SS. Some not psychiatric nausea medications like Reglan or antibiotics like Linezolid, supplements such as St. John's wort also increase Serotonin in the body. As a result, knowing medication interactions are essential to avoid excessive Serotonin in the body. That is why it is important to ask patients about all taken medications. The severity of the syndrome varies from producing mild discomfort to required admission to ICU.
