NR 535 Week 7 Case Study: Academic Integrity - Part I, Part II, Part III

You are the chairperson of the School of Nursing Grievance Committee. On Monday morning, you receive an e-mail from Susie Student, who wants to file a grievance. She has been expelled from the nursing program due to plagiarism. You ask Susie to come to your office to discuss the potential grievance. During the meeting, Susie tells you English is not her native language and she is 50 years old and has always been an A student.

What are two questions you and the grievance committee would ask Susie regarding plagiarism, and what is the rationale for these questions? What are two questions you would ask the faculty member, and what is the rationale for these questions?

Ask for copy of student’s signed copy of plagiarism contract. Other instances of suspected plagiarism?

Need to gain a sense of whether this was a onetime offence or a typical pattern used to gain an advantage over other students.

Students need to be aware of what plagiarism is so that they can avoid it. All students should be educated and show proof that they have received that education.

Did the student ask for accommodations to help prevent issues with academic integrity? Have work reviewed by turnitin or tutoring staff prior to turning in?

Did you intentionally plagiarize?

If a student requests accomidations or assistance they need to receive the help requested. Knowledge of, or intention is important. There is a difference between ignorance and defiance.
