A leader in power has the ability to influence behavior of others without resistance using different methods to accomplish prompt action, as well as having the ability to get things done effectively to help achieve their goals and objectives. As a nurse executive, being in power means having control of your staff and having them support your efforts to ensure all of your team goals are met. Without influence on team members, it is not easy to achieve long term desired goals. In order to ensure power is managed efficiently, it is necessary to identify different leadership styles that nurse executives can employ. As Holyfield Healthcare Systems and Jonesville Regional Hospital are merging, senior leadership will decide on which organizational structure, and leadership style will be used. This paper will evaluate different organizational structures and how they can affect the management of a health care system, different leadership styles, and will aim to evaluate how control of power as a nurse leader is essential to effective service delivery.
Overview of Power within Organizations
In 1959, researchers at the University of Michigan identified five different sources of power which include legitimate, reward, expert, referent, and coercive. Great leaders know how to draw on different types of power that will yield positive results and help to gain the support and commitment of your employees, which will in turn lead to better organizational outcomes. Itis important as a leader to understand the different types of power so you will know which ones will give you positive results. Great leaders know how to utilize different types of power depending on different situations. When an organization has positive power dynamics, it helps everyone in the medical profession to work effectively and build trust and positivity among workers.
