Models of Excellence

A shared governance model depicts how leadership and nursing staff collaboratively, within an organization, develop the decision-making process. This model is essential in providing quality care, increasing patient satisfaction scores, and outcomes, and improves nursing satisfaction. Allowing staff to participate in the decision-making process keeps them engaged and vested in creating a culture of excellence. The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of a shared governance model in an acute care regional hospitals setting, specifically University Hospital (UH), and the impact the shared governance framework has on nursing. I will suggest strategies used to engage the staff and leadership in the process.

Shared Governance Model

I chose shared governance because it “increases engagement, improves patient outcomes and optimizes efficiency, increases nurse retention and promotes quality care in acute care regional hospital settings” (2020). To develop a shared governance model at UH, there are a few components to implement for the shared governance model to be successful. Clinical decision-making, professional accountability, and distributive decision-making are components of the shared governance model that provide structure (Porter-O’Grady, 2019).
