Physical assessment of the abdomen is a key component of all routine physical examinations and an essential step in the evaluation of complaints about abdominal pain, distension, or masses. A well-performed abdominal assessment provides diagnostic clues about many gastrointestinal and genitourinary disorders and may offer insight into the abnormalities of other organ systems as well. An abdominal assessment encompasses inspection, palpation, percussion, and auscultation performed in sequential order. Abdominal pain is one of the most billed diagnoses. The nurse practitioner (NP) must be highly skilled in abdominal assessment to help reduce disease burden and improve quality of life.
