Pulmonary:

Anticholinergics: Inhaled meds that improve lung function by blocking muscarinic receptors in the bronchi, which results in bronchodilation

Asthma: chronic inflammatory disorder of the bronchial mucosa that causes bronchial hyperresponsiveness, contrtiction of airways and variable airflow obstruction that is reversible.

S/S: Chest constriction, expiratory wheezing, dyspnea, nonproductive cough, prolonged expiration, tachycardia, and tachypnea. Hypoxemia (O2 lower than 90%) associated with respiratory alkalosis. Acidosis occurs with increased PaCO2 as bronchospasm worsens and “status asthmaticus”, expiratory rates decrease.

Chronic bronchitis: hyper secretion of mucous and chronic productive cough that continues for at least 3 months of the year for at least 2 consecutive years.

Inspired irritants promote bronchial inflammation, causing bronchial edema, increases in the size and number of mucous glands and goblet cells in the airway epithelium, smooth muscle hypertrophy, narrowing airways. Hypersecretion of thick, tenacious mucous and cannot be cleared bc of impaired ciliary function.

Polycythemia vera: kidney’s produce more red blood cells to help circulate decrease in PaCO2- increased thickened blood blow to heart and lungs.
