Social determinants of health encompass the place in which people live, their socio-economic status, and barriers to quality healthcare. It is imperative for the advanced practice nurse to understand each of these subject areas and work to improve and educate their patient on the unique determinants they face. Addressing social determinants of health is essential for improving overall health and reducing health disparities often rooted in social and economic disadvantages (Artiga & Hinton, 2018). Improving and achieving health equity requires approaches that encompass social, economic, and environmental factors.
Health in All Policies (HiAP) is an initiative that seeks to identify and influence the health and equity impacts of broad public and private policy decisions. “A Health in All Policies approach identifies the ways in which decisions in multiple sectors affect health and how improved health can support the goals of these multiple sectors” (Artiga & Hinton, 2018, p.1). The traditionally described ‘non-health’ sectors are core to the socio-economic, cultural, and environmental conditions, including determinants of health. To reduce health inequalities, engaging with the broader impacts of policies is essential.
