Silencing the Silent Killer: Preventing Heart Disease in the United States
The number one cause of death in the United States responsible for the death of one American every 34 seconds is cardiovascular (heart) disease (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2022b). Heart disease, also known as the “silent killer,” inflicts significant economic burden on the United States accounting for approximately $230 billion in annual healthcare spend and affects over 800,000 people annually (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2021). Though there are statistical demographic variations, heart disease is the predominant cause of mortality in men, women, and people of most racial groups and ethnicities in the United States each year. This paper will focus on the population health effects of heart disease and available population health intervention to decrease its morbidity and mortality - to silence the “silent killer”.
Discussion, Overview, and Background
There are various types of heart disease, however, the most common type and the primary focus of many national and state interventions is coronary artery disease (CAD) and associated myocardial infarction (MI) (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2022b). Arteries are blood vessels in the human body responsible for supplying oxygen and nutrient rich blood to vital organs. Atherosclerosis is the very gradual process of arteries building up with plaques (fat, cholesterol, and other substances) that narrow or harden the artery causing a reduction in vital blood supply (Mayo Clinic, 2022). When the arteries of the heart (coronary arteries) become atherosclerotic, blood supply to the heart is reduced and the condition is known as coronary artery disease (CAD) (American Heart Association, 2016). Interchangeable terms for CAD are coronary atherosclerosis, atherosclerotic heart disease, and the umbrella term coronary heart disease is often used but may refer to other diseases of the heart………..
