Hypertension is defined as a systolic blood pressure reading greater than 130 mmHg and a diastolic blood pressure reading greater than 80 mmHg or anyone taking medication for hypertension. In 2020, more than 670,000 deaths in the United States had hypertension as a primary or contributing cause (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2023a). The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports about 47% of adults in the United States to have hypertension (2023). The prevalence of hypertension (HTN) in young adults ages 20-40 in the United States has been reported at 7.3% (Hinton et al., 2020). In 2022, Hawaii’s data revealed 29.8% of the state's population was diagnosed with Hypertension, ranking
7th among the nation with the most Hypertension (America's Health Rankings, 2022).
Problem Overview
Cardiovascular diseases, such as heart disease and stroke, most often secondary to hypertension, are the leading causes of death in Hawaii and are the reasons for over 18,000 hospitalizations yearly (State of Hawaii Department of Health Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion Division, 2023). Cardiovascular disease accounts for about 22 percent of all Hawaii hospital costs (State of Hawaii Department of Health Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion Division, 2023). According to America's Health Rankings (2022), the number of adults who reported being told by a health professional that they had high blood pressure was 29.8%. 12% of this rate comprises young adults compared with the US average of 14% (America’s Health Rankings, 2022)………..
