Unintentional childhood injury and deaths, such as motor vehicle accidents and suffocation, is one of the most primary causes of death in children nationally. The general director of the World Health Organization (WHO), Ann Veneman (2020), reported that unintentional injuries have become the biggest threat to survival for children today.
Unintentional childhood injuries have become a global and public threat leading to mortality.
Globally the issue of unintentional childhood injury and deaths has become such a high threat to children. In focusing upon a smaller scale of reports within Illinois allows for a more critical analysis and in depth look upon its effect upon the population for better care outcomes and interventions.
Overview
The Illinois Child Death Review Team (CDRT), submitted by JB Pritzker developed an annual report of childhood deaths that occurred within 2018. The CDC continues reporting that motor vehicle accidents caused majority of those unintentional injuries and deaths; in recent data suffocation has increased by 20% among all infants (CDC,2021). Suffocation accounts for 55% of injuries and deaths in infants, the leading cause deaths in infants (Cuneo et al., 2020).
