Osteoporosis is a "silent disease" that is characterized by low bone mass, deterioration of bone tissue, and disruption of bone microarchitecture: a severe condition in which bones become thin, fragile, and are easily broken. Osteoporosis is a health concern worldwide, with over 200 million people currently suffering from osteoporosis. In the United States, the National Osteoporosis Foundation estimates that more than 55 million Americans, or 55% of people at least 50 years of age, have osteoporosis or low bone density(Osteoporosis, n.d.).
Osteoporosis is more common in Caucasians, women, and older people. Approximately 80% of those affected by osteoporosis are women, and one in eight men suffer from the disease, but this rate is expected to increase as men are living longer(Osteoporosis, n.d.). According to the USPSTF, osteoporosis varies by race/ethnicity. Osteoporosis is highest in Mexican Americans (13.4%) and non-Hispanic white adults (10.2%) and lowest in non-Hispanic black adults (4.9%) (Osteoporosis to Prevent Fractures: Screening, 2018).
During childhood, bone tissue is continuously lost by resorption and rebuilt by formation; bone loss occurs if the resorption rate exceeds the formation rate(Sozen et al., 2017).
