Oral health is an overall health issue throughout the United States. Oral health in a problem within all age groups, and races. It does not just discriminate against one certain population. By recognizing disparities in oral health, within the adult population, you can inform, provide, and promotes preventative measures against recurrent tooth decay, pain, infections, cancers, and chronic diseases. Dental caries is preventable, just require daily preventative measures to decrease the risk such as brushing and flossing regularly. This paper will identify the poor oral health issues of the Indigenous people in the U.S. and Tennessee, importance of routine check-ups and preventative care of tooth decay, discuss the epidemiology data collection on oral health and how it affects the general health of the population, Healthy People 2020 (HP2020) goal for accessing preventative care treatment, discussion on the Water Fluoride Reporting Systems (WFRS) online tool, and healthcare outcomes.
Overview, Background, and Significance of the Problem
There is over 2 million Indigenous people that live in the United States. According to the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention, 2020, 1of 4 adults in the United States have dental caries that are untreated, and approximately 46% of adults over the age of 30 have signs of gum disease. This population are at risk of tooth loss if left untreated. Oral health is an area that is put on the back burner, for many reasons. The tooth decay, loss, and infection can limit oral intake, and worsen nutrition of the adult population. In the United States, approximately 92% of the adult population has had tooth decay on their permanent teeth (National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Disease, 2018).
