Healthy People 2020 Impact: Diabetes

Type II diabetes mellitus is a disease in which the body either does not produce enough insulin or resists insulin. There are many modifiable risk factors for this disease. Some of these include uncontrolled hypertension, being overweight, and minimal exercise. Nonmodifiable risk factors include age (older than 45), a family history of diabetes, and race. In 2020, Type II Diabetes Mellitus was the eight-leading cause of death with numbers totaling over 102,000 (CDC, 2022). Healthy People 2020 had approximately twenty objectives relating to diabetes. These included reducing overall new cases, reducing mortality rate due to diabetes, a reduced amount of lower extremity amputations, and lower A1c values in the diabetic patient.

Background

Diabetes is a chronic disease caused by the pancreas not producing enough insulin or the body not effectively using the insulin it produces. More than 95% of people with diabetes have type two diabetes. This type is typically the result of excess weight and physical inactivity. Diabetes can damage nerves and blood vessels and lead to other issues such as heart attacks and stroke, vision issues, and kidney failure.

Risk and Impact

Diabetes is the leading cause of kidney failure, accounts for 60% of nontraumatic lower limb amputation, new cases of blindness in those aged 20-74, and increases the risk of stroke by four times. Diabetes also increases the mortality rate from heart disease two to four times (Kent, et. al., 2013). The American Association of Diabetes Educators has identified seven self-care behaviors that are essential for effective patient- centered diabetes management. These behaviors which include healthy eating, monitoring, taking medication, risk reduction, problem solving, being active and healthy coping are all individualized to meet patient needs. This is done through diabetes educators who assist with self-management and training. Aside from the physical comorbidities the diabetic patient faces, their mental health can also take a toll. These patients are more prone to depression, anxiety, eating disorders and emotional distress......... Continue
