This was week 7 clinicals and I was following a nurse in the oral maxillofacial unit. She assigned me one patient to care for entirely including assessments, medication and his discharge before the end of my shift. This patient was interesting case due to the surgery he received was one that I was going to subject myself to as a teen to bring my jaw forward so that it was aligned properly. Instead, I opted for 5 years of braces and still have some small amount of misalignment. He had a procedure done called a Lefort. They broke his jaw and reattached it where it was supposed to be positioned for optimum use of the jaw. He was 33 years old, which made him my age. Part of this surgery includes having his mouth wired shut and for his safety in case of vomiting they keep a pair of wire cutters at bedside.
