History of Crystal Lake
Discovered by Beman and Polly Crandall in February 1836 who were granted homestead rights by the U.S. government in August 1836.
An old Native American trail from Chicago into Wisconsin passed through Crystal Lake, and became Route 14.
In 1855, the first railroad was built in Crystal Lake, giving it direct access to Chicago, making it the first commercial hub of McHenry County.
New technology helped develop the town
