Pathophysiology of diabetes mellitus
- Diabetes is caused by an increase in blood glucose levels.
- The body can’t produce or use enough insulin
- Insulin helps convert glucose from food into energy (Ohiagu et al.,2021). Without insulin, glucose accumulates in the blood
- High blood glucose levels cause symptoms such as increased thirst and frequent urination (Tiwari, 2018).
- Long-term, high blood glucose levels can cause damage to organs and nerve systems. Damaged organs and nerve systems can cause health complications such as heart disease, stroke, and kidney failure.
