Week 6: Introduction and Topics
Hypothesis testing is a powerful statistical analysis method that lets one determine whether or not a hypothesis (or guess, or estimate) is likely to be correct. Notice, we said likely to be correct, not correct.
This is a very powerful and commonly used statistical tool. It is used to determine the need to install stop lights due to speeding, to determine potential discrimination within court cases, to determine the likely outcome of new product introductions, and to determine the effectiveness of new medicines, to name a few.
Hypothesis testing is a process involving several steps and takes some practice before one becomes comfortable with it.
