Art is something of interpretation. As the viewer, we see what we want to see. The artist provides the picture, and our brains provide the context behind the picture. The picture above by Roy Lichtenstein is an example of this. Inspiration came from the anonymous piece as seen above, and my inspiration came from both. The picture listed above the cartoons is my take on them. My drawing is called “Heartbreak Anniversary”.

The drawing Hopeless by Roy Lichtenstein was a magna piece drawn in 1963 on a canvas. Lichtenstein drew this piece as a stand-alone piece that was inspired by an anonymously submitted piece as pictured above. He saw potential in the picture of the crying woman with an unknown problem and redrew it in a less rushed way compared to the other drawing (Martin,2018 pg. 30). Lichtenstein drew this piece to stand alone rather than a part of a narrative as the drawing seen by the anonymous artist. Being that this drawing is a stand-alone piece, the meaning of the piece is up to the viewer. The title of “Hopeless” gives some definition to the piece and could provide some context such as the woman having depression or suffering some sort of heartbreak.
