Then identify and describe one of the first events that signaled the beginning of American imperialism. Make sure you use enough details to support your answer. [Students should first cite two of the following four reasons for the growing call for American imperialism: (a) Manifest Destiny and the end of the frontier, (b) financial reasons, (c) religious and moral reasons, or (d) geopolitical reasons. They could then point to one of the following events as evidence of the beginning of American imperialism: the purchase of Alaska from Russia in 1867, America’s naval buildup during and after the Civil War, the annexation of Hawaii, or the Venezuela Crisis of 1895.] See Keene, et al, pp. 562–564.

(TCOs 6 and 7) Identify and explain at least one cause of World War I. Then analyze the events that drew the United States into World War I. Evaluate America’s contribution to the war effort and to what extent America’s entry contributed to the end of the war. Make sure you use enough details to support your answer. [Students should first cite one of the following forces that led to World War I: nationalism, imperialism, or militarism. They should also analyze how the alliance system inexorably led to war. They could then point to one or more of the following events that led to America’s entry into World War I: (a) the sinking of the Lusitania in 1915, (b) the Zimmerman note, or (c) growing American resentment of U-boat attacks.

Students should point out that historians differ as to the effect America had on the ultimate outcome of the war.]  See Keene, pp. 594–600.

(TCOs 6 and 7) Identify and explain at least two causes of World War II. Then analyze America’s foreign policy before the war, and describe how that policy changed as the war progressed. Be sure to include a discussion of how the Battle of Britain influenced American opinion. Make sure you use enough details to support your answer. [Students should first cite two of the following causes of World War II: (a) the harsh provisions of the Treaty of Versailles, (b) the Great Depression, or (c) the rise of fascism in Germany and Italy. They should also discuss American isolationism during the 1930s and FDR’s reluctance to intervene in European affairs. They could then discuss FDR’s and Churchill’s friendship, which gradually led to more American involvement in the war. The Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on 12/7/1941 was the definitive turning point that led the U.S. to declare war against Germany and Japan.]  See Keene, pp. 686–689.
