What was the situation? What did the dilemma involve?
As a current worker in the healthcare field, I have seen many situations
that received a lot of conflict on whether someone was being ethical or
unethical. The dilemma that happened involved an activity therapist and
a patient on the mental health unit. The patient only spoke Spanish and
was not able to communicate, he was trying to ask the activity therapist a
question and she stated, “I’m sorry I can’t understand you” and
continued to talk to other patients. This occurred during my rotations as a
nursing student, so I did not feel like I could speak up for that patient at
that time, so I immediately left to tell my clinical instructor the dilemma
that occurred. It is our job as healthcare workers to treat all patients
equally and not discriminate someone based off their religious beliefs,
background, or the language they speak.
Subjective Moral Relativist & Cultural Relativist
Subjectivism refers to an individual’s right to their own authority on their
moral life and practices (Suharnanik, S. 2020). In my opinion there was
no effort made by the activity therapist and the patient could not even
participate because he couldn’t speak English. I do not think the
subjective relativists approach is valid because there is a fine line
between one’s own moral practices and just being rude......... Continue
