Fentanyl (C22H28N2O ) is a synthetic lipophilic phenylpiperidine opioid. It is a  Monocarboxylic acid amide. It has analgesic and anesthetic properties. Fentanyl  much like morphine, is typically used to treat chronic pain following surgical  procedures under the supervision of licensed medical professionals, such as  nurses. However, fentanyl is estimated to be around one hundred times more  potent that morphine. Fentanyl is classified as a Scheduled II controlled  substance, which is why patients being subscribed Fentanyl should be educated  and closely monitored to poteinal misemploy and abuse. It was developed in the  1950s as a need to fill an analgesia shortage. However, as of the year 2017  approximately 47,600 deaths have resulted due to the use of Fentanyl.
