Week 1 Case Study: Upper GI
Chamberlain University BIOS 256-63509 Student Name October 24th Outline the path that a bolus of food would take from the mouth to the duodenum. This should include any sphincters. For starters, the bolus of food is formed in the oral cavity where the food gets chewed and sent into the laryngopharynx. Once there, the palate, tongue, vocal cords, and epiglottis block the oral and nasal cavities and airway while pharyngeal constrictors push the bolus into the esophagus. Through the process of swallowing, the bolus gets pushed downwards and the relaxation of the lower esophageal sphincter allows it to pass into the stomach. In addition, most digestion occurs after chyme passes into the small intestine. Chyme is able to break up food particles, liquefy food, and begins the chemical digestion proteins and fats. Before making its way into the duodenum, chyme is regulated by the pyloric sphincter.
