Week 2 Lab: Protein Denaturation

  1. The purpose of this experiment was to learn about protein denaturation, which is important to me because it helps me understand how proteins lose their functional structure, which impacts many biological processes.
  2. 3 things that I observed were:
  3. The 4 most abundant elements found in our bodies are.
  4. The shape of a protein determines its function because the shape needs to be able to interact with other molecules.
  5. 3 enzymes that function in our body at different pH are.
  6. Protein denaturation is the loss of a protein's three-dimensional structure without breaking its peptide bonds. I investigated protein loss and discovered that structural proteins like collagen and keratin help to maintain the integrity of tissues like skin, bones, and hair. Denaturation of these proteins can compromise structural support, reducing tissue strength and resilience and potentially leading to conditions such as brittle bones and hair loss. I can relate to hair loss because I discovered that my hair's chemical structure contained too much protein, resulting in hair loss….
