Chemical bonds are attractive forces that bind atoms together, forming molecules. These bonds influence the formation and characteristics of molecules.

 

An essential type of bond is the ionic bond, which involves the transfer of electrons between atoms (from a metal to a non-metal), resulting in the formation of positively (cations) and negatively (anions) charged ions. Sodium chloride (NaCl) is an example of an ionic bond, where sodium (Na) donates an electron to chlorine (Cl). This transfer results from forming sodium cations (Na⁺) and chloride anions (Cl⁻).
