Pick Your Pathogen: Week 7 Assignment
Rubivirus Rubellae otherwise known as the Rubella Virus is a systemic virus infection that is only passed through humans via the respiratory route. The causative agent of Rubella is a globular, positive-sense, single-stranded RNA with spike-like hemagglutinin containing surface projections, according to (Mawson, 2019). The virus circulates when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Rubella can also be spread if a woman becomes infected while pregnant. She can pass this virus along to her growing baby and that can cause significant harm.
Rubella travels via the respiratory tract but can affect different aspects of the body, such as the skin, lymph nodes, joints, placenta and fetus (Hunt, 2016). After contracting Rubella, the virus reproduces nearby in the epithelium leading to viremia and then will spread amongst other tissues. As a result of this the disease symptoms will begin to evolve. After an incubation period of just about 2 weeks, if it occurs, people will begin to notice a rash from the initial infection.
This rash typically begins on the face and then progresses over the body. Other symptoms may present as low-grade fever, sore throat and even lymphadenopathy.
